Goat gestation period: how long are goats pregnant?
A doe's gestation runs about 150 days โ roughly five months โ though the normal range is 145 to 155 days. Larger meat breeds such as Boer often kid a day or two earlier, while smaller dairy breeds and Nigerian Dwarfs tend toward the longer end. Does carrying triplets or quads usually deliver slightly sooner than a doe carrying a single. For sheep the math is similar but shorter: ewes lamb at about 147 days.
How to calculate the due date
The simplest method is to count 150 days forward from the breeding (or "exposed") date. A quick mental shortcut many keepers use is "five months minus five days." If you know the exact day the buck covered the doe, that's your start; if she ran with the buck for a stretch, count from the last possible breeding date so you don't get caught short. Write the date down the day it happens โ a record you log immediately beats a guess weeks later. GoatLog does this automatically: log a breeding and the kidding due date appears on your home screen.
The stages of pregnancy
- Early (days 0โ50): The embryos implant. Keep the doe on her normal maintenance ration; over-conditioning now causes problems later.
- Mid (days 50โ100): The most stable phase. This is the right window for hoof trims and any handling, and many breeders deworm based on a FAMACHA check rather than the calendar.
- Late (days 100โ150): About 70% of fetal growth happens here. Increase nutrition gradually, ensure clean water and free-choice minerals, and give a CDT booster roughly 4 weeks before the due date so the kids get passive immunity through colostrum.
As kidding nears
In the final two weeks the udder fills, the doe's ligaments around the tailhead soften, and she may separate from the herd and paw at bedding. Have a clean, draft-free kidding area, towels, iodine for navels, and your vet's number ready. Most does kid without help, but knowing the due window means you can be present if something goes wrong.
Keeping breeding dates in your head works until you have more than one bred doe. Logging each breeding the day it happens โ and letting the due date calculate itself โ is the difference between a managed kidding season and a surprise in the barn.
